In a hopeful sign for female rights in Iran, President Hassan Rouhani has appointed Marzieh Afkham to head a mission in east Asia. She will be the first female ambassador since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Iranian scholar Sadeq Zibakalam says of the appointment, “This is a great decision and will pave the way for women being promoted to more senior jobs in Iran.”
