In what many are calling a first for advertising, Amazon has launched a television ad featuring an imam. The ad shows the friendship between the Muslim cleric and an Episcopal priest – depicting, through humor, how the elderly men have much in common including weakening kneecaps and their apparent love for Amazon Prime.
“We think it is an authentic and charming story,” says Simon Morris, director of advertising at Amazon. “We think it is a legitimate story. We are conscious that some people may be sensitive to it. It is about selflessness and thinking of other people.”
Mr. Morris said the Amazon producers worked with several religious groups to ensure the ad was “respectful” including the Interfaith Alliance, the National Council of Churches and the Islamic Circle of North America.
