No Laughing Matter: Comedy & News

IMG_0013The first MOST event in partnership with the Writer’s Guild of America, East featured a panel with “Daily Show” writers Kevin Bleyer and Zhubin Parang, Glenn Eichler of “Colbert Report,” and Kambiz Husseini and Saman Arababi from of “Parazit,” an online Iranian satire.

Moderated by NPR’s Steve Inskeep, the discussion focused on the unique intersection of comedy and news, and specifically, the ability of satire to defuse stereotypes and misperceptions about Muslims, Islam, and the Middle East. While political satire has long been apart of American arts and media, the panel discussed how this form of dissent has recently taken on new significance in the Middle East.
